Poetry is my solace: Diya Bhattacharya on her love for verse

Diya Bhattacharya, a Class 12 student at Apeejay School, Noida, is an emerging poet whose words beautifully capture emotions and experiences. In this conversation, she talks about her journey into poetry, her inspirations, and what makes writing so special for her.
At what age did you start writing poetry?
I began writing poetry at the age of 15.
What inspired you to write poems?
My first inspiration was my friend, who wrote such beautiful poems. I thought of giving it a try and would often ask for feedback to improve my writing.
What was the thought behind your poem on farewell?
The memories I shared with my classmates inspired me to write this poem. I was feeling nostalgic during our farewell, and I expressed those emotions through my verses.
Who is your favourite poet, and what is your favorite poem?
Robert Frost is my biggest inspiration. His poem Dust of Snow, which I read in Class 10, deeply impacted me and encouraged me to continue writing.
Rhyme or free verse?
A mix of both. Sometimes I write in rhyme, while other times, I let the words flow naturally in free verse.
Do you prefer writing poems during the day or at night?
I write whenever inspiration strikes. It can be at any time of the day and anywhere!
How has Apeejay Noida helped you in your poetry journey?
My teachers have been my biggest source of encouragement. Their support and guidance have helped me grow as a poet.
How do you approach writing a poem? How long does it take? What are your common themes?
I begin by finding inspiration—either through personal experiences or observations of the world. It usually takes me a day to craft a poem to perfection. I focus on quality rather than quantity.
My themes often revolve around self-kindness, compassion, and appreciating life’s simple joys.
Finally, what is the best thing about writing poetry?
Poetry is my way of offering comfort to teenagers who might relate to my experiences. After a long day, writing allows me to put my emotions into words, making it a deeply fulfilling process.
