National Pollution Control Day, observed annually on 02 December in India, commemorates the tragic events of the Bhopal Gas Tragedy in 1984. The day serves as a reminder of the devastating consequences of industrial negligence and emphasises the critical need for pollution control measures to safeguard the environment and human health. On this occasion, it is imperative to reflect on the progress made in pollution control efforts and renew our commitment to sustainable practices that mitigate the impact of pollution.

The Bhopal Gas Tragedy: National Pollution Control Day marks the anniversary of the Bhopal Gas Tragedy, one of the world’s worst industrial disasters. On the intertwining night of December 2-3, 1984, a toxic gas leak occurred at the Union Carbide pesticide plant in Bhopal, India, resulting in the immediate death of thousands of people and causing long-term health issues for countless others. The tragedy underscored the urgent need for stringent environmental regulations and effective pollution control measures.
Progress in pollution control efforts: Since the Bhopal Gas Tragedy, India has made significant strides in environmental legislation and pollution control initiatives. The National Pollution Control Board (NPCB) and various state pollution control boards play a crucial role in formulating policies, implementing regulations, and monitoring industries to ensure compliance with environmental norms.
Renewing commitment to pollution control: On National Pollution Control Day, individuals, industries, and policymakers are urged to reflect on their environmental impact and take proactive steps to reduce pollution. It is an opportunity to renew our commitment to sustainable practices, responsible industrial behaviour, and the conservation of natural resources.
