Early childhood education is a critical period in a child’s development, laying the foundation for their future learning and success. Play-based learning has emerged as an effective approach to fostering holistic growth and providing numerous benefits for young learners.
Play-based learning creates an engaging and enjoyable environment for children. By integrating play into educational activities, children are naturally motivated to participate, explore, and discover. This active involvement enhances their curiosity and promotes a love for learning.
“Play-based learning is always the best assistant in the teaching-learning process. The children as well as educators feel free to imbibe as much as they can from their surroundings. A topic is explained through different activities wherein students feel special and become part of it willingly. So, it is helpful in the overall growth of a child,” says Gagandeep Kaur, a pre-primary teacher at Apeejay School, Tanda Road.

Whether it is constructing with building blocks, engaging in role-playing scenarios, or solving puzzles, play allows children to develop essential cognitive and problem-solving skills in a fun and hands-on manner.

Promotes emotional intelligence, inclusivity
Play-based learning encourages social interaction and collaboration among children. Through cooperative play, they learn to negotiate, share, and communicate effectively. These interpersonal skills are vital in building positive relationships and fostering teamwork, both inside and outside the classroom. Play-based activities also promote empathy and understanding as children gain insights into different perspectives and develop their emotional intelligence.
Additionally, play-based learning caters to the diverse learning styles and preferences of individual children. As they engage in various play experiences, children can choose activities that align with their interests and abilities. This approach ensures that every child can actively participate and learn at their own pace, promoting inclusivity and celebrating their unique strengths.

Boosts holistic development
Play-based learning also nurtures creativity and imagination. When children are given the freedom to explore and experiment, they develop their problem-solving skills and think outside the box. Role-play, storytelling, and artistic activities allow them to express themselves creatively, fostering their imagination and developing their self-expression.
Finally, play-based learning supports the holistic development of children. It addresses not only their cognitive and academic growth but also their physical, emotional, and social well-being. Through physical play, children enhance their motor skills, coordination, and spatial awareness. Emotional development is fostered as they learn to manage their emotions, regulate behaviour, and develop resilience.
