Nestled in the serene Satpura range of Madhya Pradesh, Pachmarhi stands as the state’s only hill station, situated at an altitude of 1,067 meters. Fondly known as “Satpura ki Rani” (Queen of Satpura), this picturesque destination is a part of the Pachmarhi Biosphere Reserve and home to the state’s highest point, Dhoopgarh (1,352 meters), which offers spectacular sunset views. Discovered by Captain James Forsyth during the British Raj, Pachmarhi’s colonial influence can still be seen through its charming old-world architecture and the cantonment area.

Pachmarhi’s natural splendour is highlighted by its pristine waterfalls, lush forests, and rich biodiversity. As part of the Satpura Tiger Reserve since 2000, it offers a haven for nature lovers, birdwatchers, and wildlife enthusiasts. The Bison Lodge and Dhoopgarh Interpretation Centers provide valuable insights into the region’s flora and fauna. Visitors can often spot vibrant butterflies and rare bird species, adding to the area’s ecological charm.
One of Pachmarhi’s most iconic attractions is the Pandav Caves. These five rock-cut structures are believed to have been shelters for the Pandava brothers during their exile, lending the town its name—“Panch” meaning five and “Marhi” meaning caves. The caves hold not only mythological significance but also cultural heritage, with intricate rock paintings and carvings that date back thousands of years, some estimated to be 10,000 years old.
For adventure seekers, Pachmarhi offers ample trekking trails and scenic hikes. Exploring the region’s caves and waterfalls, such as Bee Falls and Apsara Vihar, is a rejuvenating experience. History, mythology, and nature come together to make Pachmarhi a captivating destination for travelers.
Easily accessible, Pachmarhi lies in the Hoshangabad district and can be reached via road from major cities. Whether you are a nature enthusiast, history buff, or someone seeking tranquility, Pachmarhi promises an unforgettable experience in the heart of Central India.
