Gurnaaz Birjha is a class 8 student at Apeejay School, Panchsheel Park. She is a very diligent student, highly skilled in Madhubani and Mandala art among other art forms. Selected as this week’s Aspiring Artist, let us read what the young artist has to say about her skills and how her journey began thanks to her school. Read edited excerpts:

Since when have you been drawing Gurnaaz?

I started drawing from class 4. So it has been four years of art madness.

What inspired you to pick up the art book?

I always liked art and all its forms. But the former art teacher in my school, Harveen ma’am, motivated me a lot. So, my art journey began within the school itself.

How many forms of art do you know?

Folk art, Mandala art, Madhubani art, landscapes and sketching.

Wow that’s quite many! Which one is your favourite?

Madhubani and Mandala art forms. I like the designs in these. It is a great joy to make them.

And how much time do these two art forms take?

Approximately 1-2 hours. They require a thorough commitment and focus. But it is all worth it in the end. The art always comes out nice.

So what according to you is the best thing about art?

Design and the colours! I love playing and experimenting with them. I think the real creativity lies there. We can also learn so much from art. From the Kalighat painting style we can learn about Mughal society. We can learn so much about society and history through art

Finally, upcoming artworks form your brush?

Lots of landscape paintings. This is also an absolute love form. I am working on a few innovative ideas in these.
