After air, water is arguably the most valuable natural resource. Even though the majority of the earth’s surface is made up of water, this resource is scarce because so little of it is actually unable. Deeply passionate about research and its potential to address real-world challenges, Harshit Rajput, a final year student pursuing Bachelor’s from School of Pharmaceutical Sciences (SPS) at Apeejay Stya University (ASU), recently worked on a research project titled  “Assessment of quality of water from different geographical locations.” Harshit has always been fascinated by the field of healthcare and the impact it has on people’s lives. Thus, the aim of working on this project was to make a meaningful impact on public health by identifying potential risks associated with water contamination while suggesting appropriate measures to mitigate them.  “This fascination, combined with my passion for scientific research and the desire to contribute to the betterment of society, led me to pursue pharmaceutical education. I believe that through pharmacy, I can make a tangible difference in the lives of individuals by ensuring the safe and effective use of medications,” mentions Apeejay student. What inspired you to work on this project?

The need for clean and safe water is a pressing global issue, and that’s what inspired me to work on this project.  When I was in third year, I did a summer internship at Arbro Pharmaceuticals Private Limited, located in Kirti Nagar, Delhi. There I worked in the Water Analysis Department and that’s when I gained knowledge on some crucial parameters to be tested. So when I was promoted to fourth year, I was asked to choose my project topic. Hence, I happily proposed this idea of  “Analysing the water from different geographical locations” to my mentor and we started working on it . Water analysis plays a crucial role in identifying contaminants and ensuring the quality of water resources. I wanted to contribute to this important area of research and make a meaningful impact on public health by identifying potential risks associated with water contamination and suggesting appropriate measures to mitigate them.

How did you start the journey, from collecting data points to chalking observations and results?

The journey of my research project began with a thorough literature review on water analysis techniques, regulatory standards, and existing research studies. I then collected water samples from various locations including Delhi, Gurugram , Faridabad and Himachal Pradesh. In the seventh semester, we went for an industrial trip to Baddi  and Shimla and that provided me with the facilities to  collect water samples from there too by following standardised sampling protocols. In the laboratory, I performed a range of tests and experiments to analyse the samples, including physical, chemical, and microbiological tests. I meticulously recorded all the observations and data points, ensuring accuracy and precision. By carefully analysing the results, comparing them with established standards, and drawing correlations, I was able to formulate meaningful conclusions and recommendations.

Why do you think this project is relevant in today’s time?

This project is highly relevant in today’s time due to the increasing concerns regarding water quality and its impact on public health. With the growing population and industrial activities, water contamination has become a significant issue, globally. By conducting water analysis and identifying potential contaminants, we can further raise awareness about the importance of clean water, inform policymakers about necessary regulations, and assist in implementing effective water treatment strategies. This project directly addresses the critical need for access to safe and clean water, making it highly relevant in today’s time.

What’s the next step?

The next step after completing this research project is to disseminate the findings and recommendations to relevant stakeholders. This can be achieved through scientific publications, presentations at conferences, or engaging with local authorities and water management organisations. Additionally, it is essential to encourage further research in this field to explore advanced techniques for water analysis, develop innovative treatment methods, and expand the scope of study to different geographical regions. Continuous monitoring and evaluation of water quality parameters will also be crucial to ensure the effectiveness of implemented measures.

How did Apeejay and your mentors support you in executing this project?

Apeejay Stya University and my mentor, Dr. Anupama Diwan,  played a vital role in supporting the execution of this project. The university provided a conducive academic environment, state-of-the-art laboratory facilities, and access to relevant resources, which were instrumental in conducting the research. The guidance and expertise of my mentor helped shape the project’s direction and methodology, ensuring its scientific rigor. She   provided valuable insights, feedback, and suggestions throughout the research process, enabling me to enhance my analytical skills and broaden my understanding of water analysis.

Your future aspiration; do you wish to pursue research?

My future aspirations involve a continued pursuit of knowledge and contributing to the field of pharmaceutical sciences. I am deeply passionate about research and its potential to address real-world challenges. Therefore, I do wish to pursue research in the future, with a particular focus on areas such as pharmaceutical analysis.
