G Deepika’s son, S Nanmaaran is a nursery student at Apeejay School, Saket. Having moved to Delhi from Tamil Nadu, the young boy faced some difficulties initially in adapting to a new city and environment. It was his class teacher who helped him and his parents at every step, reveals the mother who is an assistant manager at Indian Overseas Bank.
Excerpts:
What type of school were you looking for and why did you pick Apeejay School, Saket?
More than academics, we were looking for a school that could teach discipline. When we enquired about different schools, Apeejay turned out to be the place that met our criteria. Now that my son has studied in the school for a year, I am observing positive changes in him as well.
Take us through the admission process.
The admission process was very comfortable. The staff was very cooperative and guided us patiently in everything. The principal sir was also very cordial. Since my husband is an assistant commander at CRPF, the principal always showed him a lot of respect. Not just my son, the principal knows almost every child individually.
What kind of changes have you noticed in your child?
My son used to be a little aggressive earlier. His class teacher observed him for the first few days and called me to discuss how to help my child improve. For instance, she advised me not to speak to him harshly or give him the mobile phone for long. She asked me to spend quality time with him and narrate bedtime stories. But not even once did she say anything negative about my son, which really impressed me.
As for the changes, my son is a lot less aggressive now. He used to be a picky eater but even that has improved now. He does not ask for the phone at all times but spends time with his father and me.
What about academics or co-curricular activities?
My son’s class teacher has been a huge support by telling me about his strengths and weaknesses. She guided us on what we needed to do at home to help him. And we have seen positive results. Meanwhile, the teachers encouraged him to participate in co-curricular activities. He has developed an interest in dance and painting.
What else has your son learnt?
Through morning assemblies and yoga, Apeejay has successfully instilled good values and discipline in my child. He has learnt to do things independently, something teachers emphasise constantly. He now arranges his belongings before going to school.
Is your son comfortable at school?
When we came here from Tamil Nadu, my son did not know Hindi. He understood very little English. So, he struggled initially to learn the language and adapt to the new environment. But his class teacher made an extra effort to help him mingle with his classmates and be comfortable. I am very satisfied with Apeejay and happy to have chosen the right school for my child.
