Music is a universal language that transcends boundaries, evoking emotion and connection. A choir brings voices together in harmony, creating powerful collective expressions through melody and rhythm. Meet two students — Anhad Singh Kaundal and Vaibhav Katyayan of Class IX-B at Apeejay School, Saket. The two share their musical journey
For Anhad, music has always been close to his heart. “My journey began in Class III, when I first picked up an instrument and started learning the language of music. For years, I was deeply immersed in instrumental music, never considering singing — until something unexpected happened in Class VI. During a free period, my friends and I were rehearsing for a Teachers’ Day performance. A teacher heard us and asked me to try singing. I was hesitant and gave it a try, and that small step changed everything. I was soon invited to join the school choir,” he recounts.
His inspiration to join the choir began in 2022, when he watched one of his seniors prepare for a prestigious inter-school music competition with 32 schools from across Delhi-NCR. His dedication moved me. I told myself, “Next year, I want to be on that stage.” I began training intensively. When the next edition of Chunauthi arrived, I performed raag Yaman with sargam, symphonies, and tarana. Standing on stage, I felt fearless and gave it my all. When I heard I’d won first place, the applause and praise from the judges became an unforgettable memory,” he shared and added that music allows him to express himself in ways words can’t.
“While I aspire to become an engineer in the future, music will always be a part of who I am. Even if it’s not my profession, it will remain my lifelong companion,” he said.
Vaibhav, who has a strong interest in academics, particularly in Physics and Mathematics, is equally passionate about music. “Being part of the school choir has helped me grow creatively while also improving my teamwork and public performance skills. I realised my passion for singing in the early years of school, especially during morning assemblies and classroom performances. The encouragement I received from my teachers and peers gave me the confidence to continue and improve,” he said.
His advice to those who want to join the choir: Give it a try without overthinking. Everyone starts somewhere, and the choir is a supportive space where you can learn and grow at your own pace.
“Don’t worry about being perfect — what matters most is your interest and willingness to improve. The school provides consistent support through well-structured choir practices, guidance from experienced music teachers, and opportunities to perform at various school events. This nurturing environment has played a big role in helping me develop my musical abilities,” he said in conclusion.
