Prakrit Chandra is a talented artist from Apeejay International School, Greater Noida. This class 7 boy has an innate talent in making sketches, the way he combines monochrome with colours in the same work is captivating.
Selected for this week’s Aspiring Artist, Prakrit speaks about his artistic philosophy and the new Maa Durga artwork on which he has been working since quite a long time. Read edited excerpts:
When did you start drawing Prakrit?
I started drawing when I was in class 2. I got encouraged by my parents and especially by my brother.
Which art form appeals the most to you?
I like many art forms, but mandala art is my favorite as it needs a lot of patience and focus, and I like these characteristics in an art work. It tests me.

So how does your school support you as an artist?
I got a lot of support from my art teacher, other subject teachers and principal ma’am. My art teacher developed my interest in art when I joined this school in class 2.
What is your definition of art?
Art is something that is created with imagination and skill and that is beautiful or that expresses important ideas or feelings. That is the reason I can constantly do art for many hours.
How much time does it take you to complete an artwork? What are the common ideas and themes?

The time depends upon the integrity of that artwork. If an artwork is really specified (Mandala Art), then it takes 4 – 5 hours whereas in small artworks which doesn’t need much work (simple drawing and coloring work), that gets completed in 1 to 2 hours.
The ideas and themes that I follow are making special characters of Marvel or Gods and Goddesses. In the future, I might try something different.
Any upcoming artwork?
I am working on Maa Durga’s Mandala Art and it is testing me as it needs a lot of patience.
One new artform you wish to learn?
I will try making some visual arts like doodling, Madhubani Painting, Still Life Art, and many more. I will try adding colors to my art for as of now I was doing black and white art works.
What are your other hobbies apart from art?
I have learned 8 instruments in music – Piano, Drums, Congo, Clapbox, Dafli, Harmonium, Triangle, and Manjeera. I am currently learning Guitar and Tabla as well. I can play football very well too.
