Meet Soniya Agrawal, a media student at Apeejay Institute of Mass Communication (AIMC), Dwarka. Like everyone, Soniya too has a special place for her mother in her heart. But her love comes out in a poetic manner as she weaves magical poems on the concept of a mother’s love and shares her thoughts and feelings with the world.

Selected as this week’s Promising Poet, Soniya speaks about her love for writing anytime in the day, her favourite poets as well as mentions what makes her improve as a poet.

At what age did you start writing poetry?

At the age of 15, I wrote my first poem as a school assignment and it was an English poem on the theme of a mother. It was after the lockdown that I became more engrossed in writing poems.

What inspired you to write poems?

Whenever I feel something during a particular situation, I prefer to take out my notepad and write down everything which comes to my mind. It is generally based on my ongoing situation and also on my dear ones.

Wow. Tell us the thought behind your poem on Mother?

I have written many poems on the concept or theme of mother. I think this is the 5th or 6th poem I have written on my mother and as I said before ‘Maa’ was my first poem so she always holds a very special place in my heart.

Let’s do a little bit of rapid fire questions: Favourite poet and poem?

There are many poems which I personally like so here I would name 2 poems: “Maa mai aaj bhi tera baccha hu” by Gaurav Kumar, and second one “Kosish karne waalon ki haar nehi hoti” by Sohan Lal Dwivedi ji.

Rhyme or free verse?

Hahaha! I prefer both depending upon my topic.

So, writing poems in the day or night?

I write when I feel like writing, for me it doesn’t matter if it’s morning, afternoon, evening or the night. I just love writing on what I feel, whenever I feel.

How does AIMC help you to write such lovely poems?

AIMC is a wonderful place, full of opportunities in different areas. There are a lot of activities within the campus which helps in creative thinking. So, I owe a lot to AIMC.

How do you approach writing a poem? How much time does it take you to finish one?

I start by thinking and writing everything that comes tpo my mind, then I take selections from the larger picture. I won’t be able to specify the time duration as it differs from poem to poem. There is however one poem: ‘School to office journey’ that I wrote in one go.

Finally, the best thing about writing poetry for you?

Once I complete any poem, I read it multiple times to understand if I am able to convey my voice through my poetry. This process helps to grow.
