Apeejay School, Panchsheel Park recently hosted a Maths Hackathon for students of Classes III to V. The event aimed to enhance mental maths skills and problem-solving strategies among young learners. The hackathon included a series of challenging maths and mental maths questions designed to test the students’ calculation speed and accuracy. The top achievers from each class were awarded special badges to recognise their outstanding performance.

The Maths Hackathon was a dynamic platform where students not only showcased their strengths in mathematics but also had the opportunity to learn from their mistakes. Ms. Manisha Narayanan, a Maths teacher at Apeejay School, explained, “Maths Hackathons are conducted in classes 3 to 5 every month. In this activity, the students are given a set of maths questions which they answer by doing the calculations mentally. This activity helps the students boost their learning capacity by improving problem-solving and critical thinking skills.”

By engaging in this event, participants developed quicker calculation skills, improved their ability to think critically under pressure, and gained confidence in handling complex mathematical problems. Ms. Narayanan further added, “The activity can help them to understand maths concepts better instead of just memorising them. The students are more likely to approach the subject with a positive outlook.”

The event was carefully organised to encourage a spirit of healthy competition among the students. The questions ranged from basic arithmetic to more advanced mental maths puzzles, tailored to the age group of the participants. Teachers and mentors provided guidance throughout the event, ensuring that each student could perform to the best of their ability. “As a teacher, I find this activity as a strategy to develop strong foundation skills in the subject. It can help in developing cognitive skills including attention, concentration, and memory,” noted Ms. Narayanan.

Parents and teachers alike appreciated the initiative, recognising it as a valuable exercise in fostering a deeper understanding of mathematics at a young age. The success of the Maths Hackathon underscored the school’s commitment to providing students with opportunities that go beyond the standard curriculum, focusing on practical skills that will benefit them in their academic journey and beyond.

Overall, the Maths Hackathon at Apeejay School, Panchsheel Park, was a resounding success, leaving students with enhanced mathematical abilities and a sense of accomplishment. The event highlighted the importance of mental maths in everyday life and set a precedent for future educational activities at the school.
