Rooted in ancient philosophy and modern practice, taekwondo combines powerful physical techniques with mental focus and spiritual balance. “I feel elated when this defense art form ameliorates my each kick, stance, and breath that refines strength, agility, and endurance while instilling discipline, resilience, and self-control,” expresses Yakshit Sharma who is studying in Class XI at Apeejay School, Faridabad, Sector 15-A. In a candid interview with us, this practitioner claims he is on a journey of self-mastery.
Tell us something about your recent achievement.
Recently, I won a Bronze medal in CBSE Taekwondo National Championship held in Etawah, Uttar Pradesh, and a Bronze in school games State-level held in Fatehabad. My recent Taekwondo competition was a wonderful experience. I put in a lot of hard work and training to prepare for it. The matches were challenging, and winning a medal wasn’t easy. I got injured during one of the matches, which made things even more difficult, but in the end, it was a proud and memorable moment for me, my parents and my coach.
How did you pick interest in this sport?

I first attended a summer camp in Class III at the school, where I developed an interest in sport. From that moment, I aspired to represent my school, city, state and eventually my country. Next year will mark a decade of my journey in Taekwondo, and I am proud to have recently achieved the rank of 3rd Dan Black Belt.
Who is your inspiration and why?
My biggest inspiration in Taekwondo has always been my coaches. They’ve guided me from the very beginning, not just in improving my techniques but also in teaching me the values of discipline and respect.
Share your training regime.
My training regime consists of two sessions a day. I train once at my academy, focusing on taekwondo practice, and later in the gym for strength training. I follow this routine five times a week, from Monday to Friday, combining different aspects such as stretching, strength, and speed training. On Saturdays, I dedicate my time to stretching and relaxation to recover and maintain flexibility.
How did the school support your taekwondo journey?
My school has helped me in many ways by constantly supporting and encouraging me. The appreciation I receive for my achievements motivates me to perform even better. My teachers have always been understanding, allowing me to balance my studies with my training, which has played an important role. The support of my teachers and school makes every achievement more meaningful. I feel honoured to represent my school through Taekwondo.
How has this sport honed your personality?
This sport has shaped my personality by teaching me discipline and self-control. Through consistent training, I have learnt the value of hard work and perseverance. Taekwondo has helped me build confidence, remain calm under pressure, and develop respect for others. It has not only moulded me as an athlete but also as an individual. Additionally, it has helped me stay fit and focused on my goals.
