After several months of dedication and toil, Advait Varma from Apeejay School, Noida, achieved what he set out to do—he cracked JEE Advanced 2023 with a score of 174 out of 360, securing an All India Rank (AIR) of 3010. It was his focus coupled with immense conviction that kept him going and finally rewarded him.

After scoring 99.72 percentile in JEE Mains 2023, Advait meticulously strategised for his JEE Advanced preparation. After all, the two exams are very different in terms of their respective difficulty levels, he says. “Physics and Chemistry in JEE Mains is relatively easy but in JEE Advanced, you have to master advanced-level questions. If you just go by your Mains preparation, you might not be able to get a good score.

“So, for JEE Advanced, I focused on problem-solving. I referred to different books and solved a lot of high-level sample papers to boost my critical thinking abilities.”

But the talented student also knew how not to overburden himself. Throughout his preparation journey, he ensured a fine balance between academics and leisure. “I used to study for three hours (to match the exam duration) and then take a break for an hour during which I would eat and watch YouTube. That really helped maintain discipline,” he states.

‘My parents kept motivating me’

Advait’s score in JEE Advanced, however, did not come as a surprise. “I had already calculated my marks the day after the exam. So, it was expected.” He recalls how his parents and teachers supported him throughout the journey. “I remember scoring less in some mock tests, but my parents kept motivating me to believe in myself, which helped,” he says.

The aspiring engineer is patiently undergoing the JEE counselling session at present. Hailing from a family of engineers, he is happy to have made his parents proud. Based on his score, he is now eyeing a BTech in Mechanical or Electronics Engineering from an IIT. “I have studied the course structure for both streams, and they seem interesting. In fact, my father is an electronics engineer from IIT Bombay and my mother is an electrical engineer. My parents are quite involved in the counselling process and they are guiding me.”

After two long years of rigorous preparation throughout class XI-XII, Advait is now enjoying himself before he begins the next chapter of his life. “I am spending my time watching movies. I recently watched Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and I am waiting to watch some more content,” he signs off.
