Charvee, a bright and spirited Class 8 student from Apeejay School, Model Town, Jalandhar, recently attended a unique 10-day residential camp at Shaolin Gurukul in Nainital. The camp, led by renowned martial arts expert Shifu Kanishka Sharma, offered intense training in Shaolin Kung Fu, boxing, and other combative arts. Charvee shares her thrilling experience, her love for martial arts, and how her school supported her journey.

What inspired you to attend the Shaolin Gurukul camp?

My father introduced me to martial arts for self-defense, as he believed it’s essential for girls in today’s world. I’ve been practicing Shaolin Kung Fu for four years now. When my teacher, a student of Shifu Kanishka Sharma, suggested this camp, I was thrilled. Although it’s usually for people aged 18+, my teacher encouraged me to go, saying it would be a life-changing experience.

How did your school support you in attending this camp?

Apeejay School has always been very supportive. I wrote an application to our Principal, who already knew about my interest in Kung Fu from a previous self-defense session. She happily granted me leave for the camp. The teachers also helped me catch up on the lessons I missed.

What was the training like at the camp?

It was amazing and intense! We trained in Shaolin techniques, boxing, and even learned about Kali and Pikadi. The boxing sessions were conducted by an MMA instructor from Noida. The discipline and life at the camp were incredible.

How has Apeejay School contributed to your overall development?

Apeejay offers excellent academics and extracurricular opportunities. The teachers, infrastructure, and even our library are amazing. I love spending time in the library reading fiction books. The school’s encouragement and support have been instrumental in my growth.

Do you see martial arts becoming a profession for you?

Not really. I practice Kung Fu for self-defense and personal growth, not to compete or showcase. It’s something I cherish for myself.
