Why December 4?
Indian Navy Day marks the successful Operation Trident during the 1971 Indo-Pak War. From safeguarding sea lanes to participating in global humanitarian missions, the Navy symbolises India’s growing maritime influence.
A women-centric legacy
The Indian Navy has made significant strides in empowering women. In 2020, Lieutenant Commander Karabi Gogoi became the Navy’s first woman officer to be posted as a defense attaché abroad. Environmental guardians of the seas
The Indian Navy is actively contributing to environmental conservation. It has implemented the Indian Naval Green Initiatives, focusing on solar power, reduced fossil fuel consumption, and eco-friendly ship designs. The Navy’s efforts to protect marine ecosystems are unparalleled.
Naval aviation’s rise
The Indian Navy’s air wing is among its most formidable assets. The INS Vikrant, India’s first indigenous aircraft carrier, is a marvel of engineering and a testament to self-reliance under the ‘Make in India’ initiative. Its state-of-the-art technology places the Navy among the world’s elite maritime forces.
The Mysterious “White Dolphins”
Some Indian Navy ships are nicknamed “White Dolphins” because of their sleek, dolphin-like hull designs that make them fast and stealthy in water.
Beyond Borders: International missions
The Indian Navy participates in numerous international exercises, like Malabar and RIMPAC, enhancing interoperability with global navies. Its missions extend to disaster relief, evacuation operations, and anti-piracy patrols, embodying its motto, Sham No Varunah (May the Lord of Water be auspicious unto us).
