Math Day is celebrated in schools to honour the significance of Mathematics in everyday life and to commemorate the contributions of mathematicians like Srinivasa Ramanujan. It promotes logical thinking, problem-solving skills, and a love for numbers among students through engaging activities, fostering an appreciation for the subject’s practical applications.

National Mathematics Day is celebrated on December 22 every year to honour the birth anniversary of the legendary Indian mathematician, Srinivasa Ramanujan, whose groundbreaking contributions continue to inspire mathematical thought worldwide. This day emphasises the importance of mathematics in everyday life and aims to ignite students’ interest in the subject.

The Mathematics Day celebration at Apeejay School, Noida focused on fostering a love for numbers and creating awareness about the practical applications of mathematics. A series of engaging and collaborative activities were organised for students of Classes III to V, offering them hands-on learning experiences.

For class III, the activities revolved around the concept of measurement. Students explored the difference between non-standard and standard units of measuring length using hand spans and measuring tapes. To add an element of fun, they measured their heights by stretching their arms vertically and comparing their reach with measuring tapes. This activity helped them grasp measurement concepts through real-life applications.

Students of class IV students embarked on an exciting visit to the school stationery shop. In small groups, they selected various items, noted their prices, and calculated the total cost of their chosen items. This engaging exercise not only strengthened their arithmetic skills but also enhanced their understanding of money management and teamwork.

For class V students, the ‘percentage palette’ activity was designed to deepen their understanding of fractions, decimals, and percentages. Through a creative and enjoyable approach, they learned to relate these mathematical concepts seamlessly. The hands-on activity ensured that the students grasped these essential topics in a fun and memorable manner.

The Mathematics Day celebration was a blend of excitement, curiosity, and valuable learning. It successfully instilled a deeper appreciation for mathematics among the students, making the day both enjoyable and enriching. Such initiatives serve as a reminder of the integral role mathematics plays in shaping critical thinking and problem-solving skills, preparing students for real-world challenges.
