Alisha Sheikh,  a class VII student at Apeejay School, Panchsheel Park beautifully illustrates through words, the ups and downs teenagers face socially. She carves a beautiful portrait of the inner landscape of youngsters, containing deep valleys of doubt that also contains high peaks of happiness and success.

However, our poetessis on the lookout for plain lands of peace, acceptance and bliss. Speaking about her craft in this week’s Promising Poet interview,

   Excerpts from the interview.

At what age did you start writing poetry?
I started writing poems at the age of 12.  In these last couple of years, I find that I am not the same person I was back then. I find worlds moving within me with every poem I write.

What inspired you to write poems?
Social life! To sum it up in two word. I feel inspired by watching the world around me. The social life around me with all its complex interactions, emotions, interactions makes me want to express myself through poems.

Tell us the thought behind your poem: Splintered Soul?
My thought behind the poem was to make people realise the positives of the world rather the dark side of the social nature. It is a song of pain and angst. It is a poem which is very close to my heart and it’s written sensitively with a lot of nuances and sensitivity.  I wrote it along with my friend Girisha Kapoor. We co-wrote this poem..

So, who is your favourite poet and what is your favourite poem?
My favorite poet is Anne Brontë and my favorite is her iconic poem Lines Composed in o Wood on a Windy Day.

Rhyme or free verse?
Free verse, free verse all the way! No boundations, no limits, endless and free it is like the sky itself.

Writing poems in the day or night?
Writing poems in the day. I prefer the sun and I am not a night owl. So, I like to write poems during the day, that is when I am most creative.

How does your school support you to write such lovely poems?
My school supports me by publishing my poems in the lovely platform called Apeejay Newsroom. This website is indeed a big encouragement to all artists. A big shout out to the Apeejay Newsroom.

Tell us about your process of writing a poem.
It takes me approximately half an hour to finish a poem. It is an enjoyable process. It is like the words come out on their own. And as I mentioned above, my common writing themes are mostly based on social life.

The best thing about writing poetry for you.
Expressing myself and the world around me.
