Cracking the National Defence Academy (NDA) exam is a dream cherished by thousands of young aspirants who aspire to serve the nation with pride, discipline, and honour. For school and college students, the journey towards NDA success is not merely about clearing an exam—it is about embracing a way of life rooted in dedication, resilience, and leadership.
The exam, conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), assesses candidates in two key stages: a written examination and the Services Selection Board (SSB) interview. The written test evaluates proficiency in Mathematics and the General Ability Test (GAT), which includes English, General Knowledge, Physics, Chemistry, History, Geography, and Current Affairs. To excel, students must build conceptual clarity, particularly in Mathematics and science subjects, while developing strong reading habits to enhance vocabulary and awareness of global events.
Consistency is the cornerstone of preparation. A well-structured study plan, aligned with the school curriculum, especially the NCERT books, forms a strong foundation. Regular practice of previous years’ question papers and mock tests helps students understand the exam pattern, improve time management, and identify areas for improvement. Equally important is physical fitness. Aspirants must incorporate daily exercise, running, and sports activities into their routine, as physical endurance plays a vital role during the SSB process and later training at the academy.
The SSB interview is a unique and holistic assessment of personality, leadership potential, and decision-making skills. Here, qualities such as confidence, communication, teamwork, and presence of mind are tested through group discussions, psychological tests, and outdoor tasks. Students should actively participate in debates, sports, and extracurricular activities at school and college to naturally build these attributes.
“Beyond the exam lies a prestigious and rewarding career in the Armed Forces. An NDA cadet undergoes rigorous academic and military training, graduating as a well-rounded officer ready to lead with courage and integrity. The career offers not only job security and respect but also opportunities for adventure, global exposure, and personal growth. From flying advanced fighter jets to commanding troops or navigating naval vessels, the possibilities are both challenging and fulfilling,” Ritik Baloda, an alumnus of Apeejay School, Charkhi Dadri, who cracked his NDA exam recently, shared.
