Her son has just taken his Class X Board exams and plans to take up PCM since he is interested in Math. When the parents had to admit him to nursery at Apeejay School, Pitampura, they knew that most professionals in this area were sending their children to this school. Hence, this family naturally chose this school for their son Garv Gulia. Meet Dr Smriti, a paediatrician.

In a candid interview, the mother talks about a moment that made her proud as a parent, among other things.

What changes or improvements have you seen in him over time?

It is a lovely school. All the teachers are very cooperative. They adapt according to the child’s time and needs. I feel that has helped him grow well. As a parent, I don’t have to balance anything. I did not have to teach him for his Boards. He manages his studies on his own.

Can you share a moment that made you feel especially proud of your son?

In Class IX, he decided he wanted to clear the Junior Science Olympiad and go to the camp. He set that goal and achieved it. In Class 10, he aimed to appear for Math Olympiads and cleared the first two stages. I feel proud that whatever he targets, he works for it and achieves it. The school and its teachers have supported him a lot in this endeavour.

Q: What co-curricular activities does he enjoy or excel in?

He is interested in literature. He writes very elegantly. I often tell him he should become a novelist. He is also genuinely interested in drama. Although he is not participating much now because of higher classes, he thoroughly enjoys it. The school’s encouragement has helped him become a confident speaker.

The school focuses a lot on values and discipline. How do you see these values reflected in him?

Screens and peers heavily influence children today. But because of the environment at this school, he is quite mature in his decision-making. He is not easily influenced by peer pressure. The guidance given by teachers plays a big role. He seems to look up to his teachers and follows their example.

How did the teachers support him during his Class X Boards?

The teachers were very cooperative. Since he was preparing for Math Olympiads, he was planning to focus on Boards later. The teachers gave him the freedom to do that, which was important for him.
