Recently, 34 students of Classes XI and XII (Medical) from Apeejay School, Mahavir Marg, stepped out of their classrooms for a practical lesson on environmental science. Accompanied by teachers Ms Neetu Bhardwaj and Ms Vasu, the group visited the Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) at Pholriwal, Jalandhar.
The students were guided by Mr Pankaj Kumar, Senior Chemist at the facility. He explained each step of the process with clarity, helping students connect textbook knowledge with real-world application. They observed how wastewater is treated through physical separation, followed by biological processes that break down organic matter.

The visit also highlighted how treated by-products are put to use. Sludge is converted into compost, while methane gas produced during treatment can serve as a source of energy. Students noted how these practices support both waste management and energy conservation.
Linking learning with environmental responsibility
The tour offered more than just technical explanations. It helped students see the larger picture of how treated water is either released into the River Satluj in a safe form or recycled for further use. This gave them a deeper understanding of how science contributes to protecting natural resources.
For many, the most striking takeaway was the idea that waste can be turned into something useful. The practical demonstration of reuse and recycling showed how communities can manage resources wisely while reducing harm to the environment.

A lasting impression
The visit was both informative and thought-provoking. It encouraged students to view Science as a living subject that extends beyond exams and classrooms. More importantly, it gave them a sense of responsibility as future citizens who will play a role in preserving the environment.
By the end of the tour, the group left with sharper insights into sustainable practices and a renewed awareness of the importance of water conservation. It was a lesson in how education, when tied to real-life experiences, can truly shape young minds.
