Google Maps is set to receive new features powered by Gemini, the company’s generative AI model, enhancing user experience in the US. The updates will allow users to easily discover new places and get answers about various locations through conversational prompts. For example, asking Maps for “things to do with friends at night” will generate a curated list of activities, like visiting a speakeasy or enjoying live music, complete with user reviews and specific queries about the venue, such as outdoor seating availability.

Additionally, Google Maps is improving navigation, particularly in complex driving situations. The app will now clearly display lanes, crosswalks, and road signs, guiding users on which lane to be in to avoid last-minute merges. Users can also explore attractions, dining options, and scenic spots along their route before starting their journey. Once they reach their destination, Google Maps will provide information about nearby parking and even walking directions from the car to the entrance, with features like Street View and augmented reality navigation.

New functionalities include the ability to report weather-related road disruptions, such as flooded areas or low visibility.

The Immersive View feature, which offers a 3D model of destinations, will expand to 150 cities worldwide, including Brussels, Kyoto, and Frankfurt.

In related news, Google is also integrating Gemini into Waze, where users can report traffic incidents via voice commands, streamlining communication on road conditions. These updates, launching this week on Android and iOS, are aimed at enhancing competition with Apple Maps and other navigation apps.
