Google is advancing its mission to leverage AI to address critical global challenges by announcing new collaborations in India across the health, agriculture, and sustainability sectors. For the past five years, Google’s research teams have worked closely with local partners to adapt AI for India’s unique needs, with a focus on strengthening communities and improving lives.

In the health sector, Google is tackling the serious issue of diabetic retinopathy, a leading cause of blindness. With an AI model designed for early detection, Google has supported over 6 lakh screenings globally. Now, in partnership with Forus Health and AuroLab in India, and Perceptra in Thailand, Google aims to assist 6 million screenings over the next decade, targeting resource-constrained communities at no cost to patients. These screenings will play a crucial role in preventing blindness by enabling timely medical intervention.

In the sustainability sector, Google has developed CircularNet, an open-source Machine Learning model that improves plastic recycling efforts. Powered by TensorFlow, CircularNet uses computer vision to identify and categorise plastic waste, helping to optimise sorting and recycling processes. This model is a significant step toward supporting the circular economy, reducing plastic waste, and minimising environmental impact.

These partnerships underscore Google’s commitment to applying cutting-edge technology to drive positive change. By focusing on health and sustainability, Google is not only contributing to a healthier India but also fostering global innovations in AI for the betterment of society.
