In a landmark step towards integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) responsibly into academia, Google and Internet2 have jointly launched the Internet2 NET+ Google AI Education Leadership Program (ELP). This collaborative initiative aims to empower universities with the tools, frameworks, and community support needed to harness AI for teaching, learning, and research.
The program is designed to help higher education institutions adopt AI technologies such as Gemini for Education and NotebookLM — tools that enable personalised learning, advanced research assistance, and administrative innovation. By offering a community-driven framework, ELP ensures that universities can explore AI’s transformative potential while navigating its ethical, technical, and operational complexities responsibly.
The inaugural cohort of ten universities represents a diverse mix of public and private institutions across the United States, collectively serving over 325,000 students. Participating universities include the University of California, Berkeley; Lehigh University; New York University; the University of Hawaii; the University of Maryland, Baltimore County; the University of Washington; and the University of Wisconsin–Madison, among others.
Through this partnership, Google and Internet2 aim to foster a culture of collaboration, enabling institutions to share insights, develop best practices, and shape the future of AI in higher education.
The AI Education Leadership Program stands as a pioneering effort to bridge the gap between cutting-edge technology and educational excellence, positioning participating universities at the forefront of innovation and responsible AI integration in academia.
