Observed annually on April 2, World Autism Awareness Day serves as a global reminder to promote understanding, acceptance, and inclusion of individuals on the autism spectrum. Emphasising empathy and respect for neurodiversity, the day encourages communities to come together and create supportive environments where every individual feels valued.
Marking this important occasion, Apeejay School, Mahavir Marg, organised an engaging and thought-provoking interactive session for students of Class XII. The activity was conducted by the School Counsellor, Ms Ria Sharma, who guided students through meaningful discussions and reflective exercises centred around autism awareness.
The session aimed to deepen students’ understanding of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and dispel common myths associated with it. Through open dialogue and interactive participation, students were encouraged to express their perceptions, ask questions, and explore the challenges faced by individuals with autism in everyday life. Ms Sharma sensitively highlighted the importance of recognising and appreciating differences, fostering a sense of compassion and inclusivity among the students.
A key aspect of the activity involved students brainstorming practical and meaningful ways to spread awareness about autism within their communities. They discussed the role of empathy, active listening, and respectful communication in building inclusive spaces. Students also shared ideas on how schools and society at large can support individuals with autism through small yet impactful actions, such as promoting acceptance, avoiding stereotypes, and encouraging equal opportunities.
The session was aligned with this year’s theme, Autism & Humanity: Every Life Has Value, which reinforces the belief that every individual, regardless of their abilities, deserves dignity, respect, and understanding. The theme resonated strongly with the participants, inspiring them to reflect on their own attitudes and responsibilities as members of an inclusive society.
The interactive nature of the activity ensured enthusiastic participation, with students demonstrating sensitivity and maturity in their responses. It not only enhanced their awareness but also instilled in them a sense of responsibility towards creating a more compassionate and accepting world.
Overall, the initiative by Apeejay School, Mahavir Marg, was a meaningful step towards nurturing empathy and promoting inclusivity among young minds. By engaging students in such important conversations, the school continues to uphold its commitment to holistic education and social awareness, empowering students to become thoughtful and responsible individuals.
