The Fashion Design Department of Apeejay Institute of Design (AID) recently organised an educational field visit for its students to Century Overseas, a well-established export house located in the Kirti Nagar Industrial Area, New Delhi. The visit aimed to provide students with practical exposure to the functioning of the garment export industry and help them understand the various stages involved in garment production.

Established in 1991, Century Overseas has earned a strong reputation in the global fashion export market. The company specialises in the production and export of woven garments, leather garments, designer wear, and leather accessories.

During the visit, students were introduced to the two primary operational units of the export house—woven garments and leather garments. Both units are equipped with a well-organised setup of mechanical and manual systems that ensure efficient production. The students were taken on a guided tour of various sections within the facility, beginning with the material store, where fabrics and raw materials are carefully maintained.

The tour continued through several important departments, including sampling, cutting, embroidery, sewing, washing, finishing, and packaging. In the embroidery section, students observed different techniques such as hand embroidery, machine embroidery, and computerised embroidery. This exposure allowed them to understand the technical aspects and craftsmanship involved in garment detailing.

One of the key highlights of the visit was the opportunity to witness the process of pattern making and grading using computer-aided design (CAD) technology. The students gained valuable insights into how modern digital tools are used in the fashion industry to create precise patterns and improve production efficiency.

The export house also houses a dedicated design department with a display gallery showcasing samples of designer garments prepared for export. The gallery provided students with a closer look at the creativity, quality standards, and finishing required for international markets.

Overall, the field visit proved to be an enriching learning experience. Students were able to observe the complete garment manufacturing process—from initial sampling and design development to final production and shipping. The opportunity to see, touch, and examine different materials and techniques helped them better understand industry practices.

Jainab Parveen from  IV Sem, EDD – Fashion, shared, “I had the opportunity to visit Century Overseas House, a reputed export house company. This visit was a highly informative and inspiring experience for me. I was especially impressed by how teamwork, coordination and time management helped in handling large-scale orders efficiently. The use of modern machinery and strict quality control processes also made a strong impression on me. This visit enhanced my understanding of the real industrial workflow and helped me gain practical knowledge beyond classroom learning. It was a valuable experience that motivated me to learn more and grow in the fashion industry.”

The visit not only enhanced their practical knowledge but also broadened their design perspective, inspiring them to apply these insights in their future creative work.
