National Absurdity Day, celebrated every year on November 20, invites us to revel in the nonsensical and unconventional—a day to appreciate the brilliance of absurdity in its myriad forms. In the world of literature, the absurd has been a rich source of creativity, sparking joy, wonder, and a deeper reflection on life’s peculiarities. Two literary giants who masterfully wielded absurdity to enchant readers across continents and generations are Lewis Carroll and Sukumar Ray.
Lewis Carroll, the pen name of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, is synonymous with the absurd, thanks to his timeless masterpieces Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass. These works are a playground of whimsy, where logic is delightfully turned on its head. Talking animals, nonsensical riddles, and surreal landscapes create a world that mirrors reality but operates on its own eccentric rules.
Carroll’s characters, from the enigmatic Cheshire Cat to the argumentative Mad Hatter, embody the absurd, challenging conventional thinking and embracing the unexpected. Through playful language and paradoxes—such as “Why, sometimes I’ve believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast”—Carroll invites readers to suspend reality and indulge in pure imaginative freedom. His absurdities are not just entertaining but thought-provoking, subtly questioning societal norms and logic.
India’s literary realm witnessed the advent of the absurd through Sukumar Ray, a pioneer who infused humor and eccentricity into Bengali literature. His iconic collection of poems and stories, Abol Tabol (translated as Rhymes Without Reason), introduced readers to a fantastical world teeming with bizarre creatures, quirky situations, and delightful nonsense.
Ray’s poems, such as Khichuri and Bhooter Raja Dilo Bor, are masterpieces of absurdity that tickle the imagination while offering subtle social commentary. His characters—like the fantastical Ha-Ja-Ba-Ra-La creatures—remain etched in readers’ minds for their sheer uniqueness. Much like Carroll, Ray used absurdity to critique societal rigidity, proving that nonsense can carry profound meaning.
Absurdity in literature allows us to step away from the constraints of logic, embracing creativity and challenging conventional perspectives. Carroll and Ray, in their unique ways, remind us that the absurd is not meaningless; rather, it opens up a realm of infinite possibilities, inspiring both laughter and introspection.
So, on National Absurdity Day, let us toast to the whimsical and the nonsensical, cherishing the literary brilliance of those who dared to embrace the absurd.
