The relevance of a session on Indian Ethos and Multiculturalism cannot be overstated in today’s interconnected world. Such discussions help students understand the significance of cultural diversity and shared values, fostering critical thinking and curiosity about how these elements shape societies. This understanding is crucial for young professionals who will navigate a multicultural environment in their careers, allowing them to appreciate the coexistence of diverse traditions and values.

Recently, Apeejay School of Management (ASM), Dwarka hosted an insightful online panel discussion on “Indian Ethos and Multiculturalism.” The event was part of an innovative pedagogy within the Indian Ethos & Universal Human Values course, aiming to deepen students’ understanding of these important topics. The session was facilitated by Dr. Puneet Bindlish, an Assistant Professor at Vrije University, Amsterdam. Dr. Bindlish’s expertise in this area made him an ideal moderator for the discussion, which was designed to inspire curiosity and critical thinking among the students.

Ms. Aishwarya Yadav opened the session by welcoming the guests and introducing the panel members, which included Ms. Samiksha Nehra, Ms. Purva Goyal, Ms. Priya Viswanathan, Ms. Deepshi, and Ms. Sweta Kumari—all student panelists from the PGDM 2024-26 batch. The discussion centered around the concept, approaches, and manifestations of multiculturalism in both Indian and Western contexts.

Dr. Bindlish highlighted India’s unique position as a living example of multiculturalism, characterised by its diversity in religions, languages, ethnicities, cuisines, and social customs. He emphasised that this rich tapestry of cultures flourished in India primarily due to shared identities that transcend individual differences. This observation underscores how Indian ethos is integral to maintaining the country’s multicultural fabric.

The discussion provided students with a comprehensive understanding of how multiculturalism operates within the framework of Indian society, and how it compares to Western approaches. Dr. Srirang Jha, Head of the General Management area, summarised the session by observing that Indian ethos serves as the foundation of a multicultural society, which interestingly exhibits both the “melting pot” and “salad bowl” phenomena simultaneously.

The session concluded with a vote of thanks from Ms. Sweta Kumari, expressing gratitude to all participants and speakers for their valuable contributions. Ms. Aishwarya Yadav, who served as the event’s compere, ensured the smooth flow of the discussion. Overall, the panel discussion successfully engaged the students, providing them with a deeper appreciation for the complexities and beauty of multiculturalism as rooted in Indian ethos.
