
Dancing for her is a catharsis and a medium to showcase storytelling through her graceful moves and expressive expressions. Meet Alka Sikka, at present, studying in Class XI at Apeejay School, Model Town. In a candid interview, she articulates how this holistic pursuit has built confidence, resilience, and a deep sense of artistic awareness in her.
Tell us about your recent achievement.
I secured second position in Solo Classical Dance at the Satyug Sangeet Utsav 2025 (City Level), organised by Satyug Darshan Sangeet Kala Kendra, Jalandhar. The event was held at Red Cross Bhavan, making it a proud and memorable achievement.
Who is your inspiration behind learning dance?
My mother has been my greatest inspiration in learning dance. When I was little, she encouraged me to take it up as a hobby. Her constant motivation sparked my interest in classical dance, helping me develop a deep love for the art form and inspiring me to pursue it with dedication.
What is your training regimen like?
I have been learning Kathak for the last six years and am currently pursuing the Visharad degree course, which is a six-year professional programme. This is my final year. My guru has guided me with patience, correcting every movement. I am deeply grateful to my parents for their constant support.
Who is your favourite dancer and why?
Vidha Lalji and Pt Rajendra Gangani are my favourite dancers. They inspire me with their graceful expressions and innovative techniques. Their unique style and powerful footwork motivate me to learn new, attractive movements, and their artistry has greatly influenced and enriched my dance performances.
How did Apeejay School support your journey?
The school has strongly supported my journey by constantly encouraging me to move forward. After losing in a previous competition, the school motivated me to try again without fear. Their belief that practice makes a person perfect inspired me to work harder, practice fearlessly, and ultimately achieve this position.
How has dancing honed your personality?
It has honed my abilities by developing a wide range of physical, mental, emotional, and social skills. It serves as a holistic activity that enhances overall well-being and character. As a form of physical exercise, it has significantly improved my posture, coordination, and expressive abilities, contributing to my growth as a confident and well-rounded individual.
