As the 2026 Board exams approach, Chemistry often feels like a challenging subject for many students. But with the right strategy, consistency, and expert guidance, it can become one of the highest scoring subjects in CBSE Class XII. To help students prepare effectively as per the updated CBSE syllabus 2026, Dr Seema Sharma, HOD, Chemistry at Apeejay School, Noida, shared her best study tips and learning techniques.
Paper Format:
1. There will be 33 questions in the question paper with internal choice.
2. SECTION A will consist of 16 multiple-choice questions carrying 1 mark each.
3. SECTION B will consist of 5 short answer questions carrying 2 marks each.
4. SECTION C will consist of 7 short answer questions carrying 3 marks each.
5. SECTION D will consist of 2 case-based questions carrying 4 marks each.
6. SECTION E will consist of 3 long answer questions carrying 5 marks each.
7. All questions will be compulsory.
Balance Physical, Organic & Inorganic Chemistry Wisely
According to Dr Sharma, each section needs a different approach — Physical Chemistry requires conceptual clarity and regular numerical practice. She suggests writing formulas with correct units every time to avoid losing marks. Organic Chemistry demands daily writing practice of reactions, mechanisms, and conversions. Meanwhile, Inorganic Chemistry hinges on learning trends and exceptions with understanding.
She advises using flashcards for d-f block elements and giving special attention to Co-ordination compounds, VBT and CFT to score better in the 2026 exams.

Master Reaction Mechanisms Through Logic
Dr Sharma strongly discourages rote memorisation. Instead, she recommends tracing electron movement via curly arrows, understanding reagent behaviour, and identifying intermediates like carbocations or free radicals to connect each step with logic — turning NCERT solutions into easier learning tools.
Accuracy Matters: Solve Smartly & Neatly
“Accuracy is a habit of paying attention to detail,” she emphasizes. Students must underline the command words in questions, cross-check numerical steps, and maintain neatness in chemical equations. Subscripts, superscripts and reaction conditions should always be placed clearly for better impression and marks.
Prepare for Case-Based Questions & Practicals
The latest CBSE updates show increasing focus on application-based questions. Dr Sharma suggests isolating data from case studies and practicing inference-based conclusions in areas like Electrochemistry and Kinetics. For practicals, understanding experiment principles, salt analysis reactions and taking accurate readings is essential.
High-Scoring Hacks for Chemistry Boards
Focus on named reactions, distinguishing tests, reasoning-based questions, and timed practice of sample papers aligned with the 2026 Board exam format. These strengthen confidence, speed and accuracy.
Ending with a motivating message for all CBSE students, Dr Sharma says, “Chemistry is not magic; it’s the methodical pursuit of understanding. Stay curious, stay systematic, and the formula for success will reveal itself.”
