India’s first female Prime Minister Indira Gandhi once said, “The power to question is the basis of all human progress.” And so, to learn about one’s rights is fundamental for all citizens. It is necessary to further the spirit of democracy.

Inspired by this thought, bright sparks of Apeejay School, Saket took a tour of the Parliament of India in New Delhi. Students of class 8 attended a programme on the occasion of the birth anniversary of Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee. During that time, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and cabinet ministers were also present to pay their tribute.

On a different date, sixty students of class 9 accompanied by three teachers visited the premises as well. Ms. Aishwarya S. Nair, a History teacher of the school says, “Students of class 9 have a whole chapter in their syllabus dedicated to the Parliament of India. So in order to help students improve their experiential understanding, this trip was organised.  Through it, they understood more about the importance of political sessions in the country.”

A student of class 9, Shaina Mohanty says, “I had a great time there! I learned a lot. We got a chance to see ministers and how they work during one of the sessions. At the Parliament, I also paid my respects to a bronze statue of Devi Ahilyabai Holkar, the 18th century ruler of Malwa, installed in the Parliament Library building. I also watched some videos based on the making of the Indian constitution and political committees.” In future, Mohanty hopes to become an astronaut and contribute towards Space research for the country.

Her classmate, Gayatri believes that the country’s upright administration is the root to its progress. She says, “I am an IAS aspirant, so during the visit I was attracted towards the books that the Parliament Library contained. I felt that there was so much knowledge to gather here.”

Overall, it was an educational tour for the students. The school’s teachers and staff put in extra efforts to ensure that the trip was planned well.
