Breaking myths, building empathy

The Interact Club of Apeejay School, Saket, in its continued pursuit of social responsibility and holistic student development, proudly partnered with the dynamic team of Enactus, Jesus and Mary College (JMC), to host an enlightening awareness session on HIV/AIDS. Held for students of Classes VIII to XI, the programme was conceived to cultivate not only an informed understanding of the subject but also a spirit of empathy, sensitivity, and civic responsibility among young learners.

The event opened with a warm introduction by representatives of both institutes, setting the stage for an afternoon of meaningful dialogue and learning. The Enactus JMC team, known for its community-driven initiatives and youth outreach programmes, facilitated the session with remarkable clarity and engagement. Their presentation transcended textbook definitions, offering students a comprehensive yet relatable understanding of HIV/AIDS, what it is, how it spreads, and, importantly, how it does not. Through well-structured explanations, interactive prompts, and real-world examples, they dispelled common myths and misconceptions that often cloud public perception of the virus.

A significant portion of the session was devoted to breaking the silence and stigma associated with HIV/AIDS. The speakers emphasised the human side of the issue, encouraging students to embrace compassion and dignity when discussing or interacting with individuals affected by the condition. They highlighted how biases, societal taboos, and misinformation contribute to discrimination, urging students to become ambassadors of kindness and informed awareness. The talk also touched upon modern advancements in treatment and the importance of early diagnosis, correct information, and community support.

The interactive nature of the session kept students deeply engaged. Thought-provoking questions, reflective scenarios, and open discussions allowed them to voice doubts, share perspectives, and broaden their understanding. By the end of the programme, the young audience not only gained reliable knowledge but also developed a more mature and responsible lens through which to view the topic.

For the Interact Club, this collaboration underscored its mission of shaping socially conscious citizens. The event empowered students to act as informed advocates for public health, equipped with both knowledge and compassion. It reinforced the belief that education extends beyond classrooms and textbooks—into awareness, empathy, and the courage to challenge stigma.

The awareness session stood as a meaningful testament to the power of collaboration, youth engagement, and purposeful education. It left students with a lasting message: informed minds and compassionate hearts can bring about real change in society.
