Meet Avni Sahoo, a graceful and committed Class 7 student from Apeejay School, Kharghar, who has already made a name for herself as a budding Kathak dancer. Trained under reputed gurus, Avni brings poise, discipline, and soul to the stage. From participating in prestigious competitions to dreaming of global recognition for Kathak, her dance journey is filled with passion and purpose. Read edited excerpts:
Avni, when did your love for Kathak begin?
Honestly, I’ve always felt connected to music and rhythm — even as a small child. Dance has always been a part of me. But I formally began training in Kathak about three years ago, and that’s when I truly began to understand its beauty.

What made you choose Kathak over other classical forms like Bharatanatyam?
I noticed that many people are already familiar with Bharatanatyam, which is wonderful, but Kathak felt like something unique — something I wanted to explore and bring more attention to. I was especially drawn to its grace and storytelling power.
Who are your biggest inspirations in the world of Kathak?
I look up to legends like Pandit Birju Maharaj Ji and Shovana Narayan Ji, but also deeply admire my gurus from Adi Shakti Sanjeev Kala Kendra — Atej Sir, Aparna Ma’am, and Srishti Ma’am. They guide me every day, not just in technique but in expression.
Tell us about your performances and how your school supports your dance journey.
My school, especially our dance teacher Ravitha Ma’am, has always given me platforms to showcase my love for Kathak. I’ve performed in many intra-school and inter-school events, including the Rotary Club Competition, Rajeshwari Kala Utsav, Independence Day functions, and more. These chances help me grow with every performance.
What do you love most about Kathak as an art form?
I love the expressive nature of Kathak — the grace, the emotions, the rhythm (taal) and footwork (tattkar), and the challenge of matching your spins (chakkars) with the music’s tempo. It’s a perfect blend of control and freedom.
What message would you give to other young students who want to learn Kathak?
I believe Kathak is more than memorising steps — it’s a form of soulful expression. My advice would be: give your heart to it. Be graceful, be expressive, and let your soul speak through every movement. If you love it, Kathak will love you back.
