Art is not just about colours and brushes, it’s a reflection of how we see the world. For Kavya Khapare, a Class VII D student of Apeejay School, Kharghar, drawing and painting have been her way of expressing joy, curiosity, and emotion since she was just six years old. Her artworks often mirror the beauty of everyday life while adding a touch of imagination and heart.
Read edited excerpts:
When did you first discover your love for painting?
I started painting when I was six years old. For me, art has always been a source of pleasure. It’s not just about creating something—it’s about feeling connected to the story or emotion that the artwork conveys. Whether it’s the joy of colours or the calm of brushstrokes, I find peace in painting.
Can you tell us about one of your favourite artworks?
Yes, one of my favourite paintings is a still-life piece that features different fruits and a glass. I used a dark, textured background to make the vibrant colours of the fruits stand out. The contrast between light and shadow gives the artwork more depth and realism.

Do you often participate in art competitions and exhibitions?
Yes, I always take part in exhibitions and competitions. They are wonderful experiences that engage all the senses and let me see how other artists express creativity. It’s inspiring and helps me learn new things each time.
What kind of paintings do you prefer—coloured or black and white?
I definitely prefer coloured paintings. Colours can express so many emotions—they can make a picture look alive, create movement, or set a mood. I love using vibrant strokes and layers to make my work more expressive.
How long does it usually take you to complete a drawing?
It depends on the level of detail. If the artwork is simple, I can finish it in about three hours. But if it’s more detailed, like a still life or portrait, it can take more than four hours.
Which part of painting do you find the most challenging?
Proportion is the most difficult part because it’s the foundation of every artwork. Getting the right relationship between the sizes of objects or between the subject and background takes a lot of focus and patience.
