Football isn’t just a game; it builds discipline, teamwork, and resilience. In this conversation, Harleen Kaur Sokhi, a young Class X striker from Apeejay School, Kharghar, reflects on how the sport has shaped her journey on and off the field.*

How old were you when you started playing football?

I was around eight years old. There’s a ground besides my building where I used to play just for fun. After some time, I realised I had a real passion for it. Especially after the lockdown, I felt that I was good at it and that I could do something with football.

Can you describe a match you’re especially proud of?

Yes, it was during the Inter-District Cup. Our team was playing the semi-final against the strongest team there. I was nervous and called my parents to come watch, even though they were planning to come for the final. The match started at 6 am, and they came. In the last 10 minutes, I got the ball and scored. We had won! It felt amazing, especially with my parents watching.

How do you balance football and academics?

It’s not easy, but I try to manage. Sometimes I skip practice to study. My school supports me a lot — they give me time to catch up on assignments. My teachers help too. If I miss a class, they let me know what was covered.

What challenges have you faced in the sport?

Building physical strength and stamina has been tough. I’ve started working out with 5 or 10 kg weights. It takes effort, but I push myself daily. And to build stamina, I run — that’s the only way.

Who is your favourite footballer?

Messi. I admire everything about him. What inspires me most is how he never gave up, even when doctors told him to quit. He kept playing because he loves the game.

How has being part of a team helped you grow?

My teammates are like family. We’re from different grades, but we support each other — even with studies during tournaments. They’ve helped me grow as a person.

What role do discipline and training play in your journey?

They’re everything. You have to wake up early, go to school, train, study, and repeat. It’s not easy — you need motivation and consistency every single day.
