For Class 8 student Shreeyasi Das, Kathak is more than just a dance form — it’s a language of emotions. With every spin, expression, and gesture, she weaves stories that speak to the heart. A passionate performer from Apeejay School, Kharghar, Shreeyasi began dancing at the tender age of six and continues to refine her art with dedication and grace. In this conversation, she talks about her journey, inspirations, and the magic of storytelling through classical dance.
Read edited excerpts:
What fascinates you the most about Kathak as a dance form?
I love how Kathak beautifully combines storytelling with graceful movements, expressions, and spins. Each performance feels like narrating a story in rhythm and motion.
Is there any specific tala or abhinaya piece that’s closest to your heart?
Honestly, all of them! I want to excel in every taal and abhinaya. But Satvika Abhinaya really inspires me—it’s about completely becoming the character you portray, which I find both challenging and fulfilling.
How do you connect emotionally with the stories you depict on stage?
I try to understand the story deeply and imagine myself living in that situation. Recognising the nine fundamental emotions or navrasas helps me express each feeling authentically.

When did your journey with Kathak begin?
I started learning dance when I was six years old. The sound of ghungroos and the beautiful stories of Lord Krishna instantly drew me to Kathak.
Who has been your biggest source of inspiration in dance?
My Gurus have been my constant inspiration, and my school dance teacher has also played a major role in shaping my love for Kathak.
Can you tell us about a performance that’s especially memorable for you?
One of my most memorable performances was at the inauguration ceremony of ISKCON Kharghar. It was such a divine and joyful experience.
How does classical dance help you express yourself better?
Classical dance teaches me to tell stories without words—only through expressions, hand gestures, and body movements. It’s a beautiful way to connect with the audience and express inner emotions gracefully.
