His favourite player is Ronaldo. His journey, skill and attitude motivate him every day. As a Class IX student at Apeejay School, Rama Mandi, football is the sport he feels most connected to, but he enjoys being active in general. Even when he tries other games, he somehow finds his way back to football because it gives him energy and focus. Meet Akaljot Singh, who, in a candid interview, shares how the teachers at the school encourage him to play football and excel at it.

How did your interest in football begin?

I started playing at an academy. My coach noticed my dedication early and encouraged me to test myself in bigger matches. He suggested I play a tournament in Nepal, and with my father’s support, I went. Winning there gave me a new level of confidence. It made me feel that the sport could take me far if I stayed committed.

Which tournaments have you played so far?

I have played internationally in both Nepal and Jammu. In Nepal, I competed in the Under 17 category in 2024, and our team finished first. I even scored a goal there, which is still one of my favourite moments.

Do you play for the school as well?

I joined this school in Class VI and since then, I have played for both the school team and my academy. Our school team secured the third position in an Inter-school event, which was a proud moment for all of us.

How do your teachers support you when you miss classes for matches?

They help a lot. If I am away, they explain everything separately and make sure I don’t fall behind. Sometimes I stay back for an extra hour to catch up. That support makes balancing football and studies much easier.

How do you manage your routine?

Usually, I study for a couple of hours first and then practise. I recently took a short break from the academy because of the cold and a minor injury, but I keep practising in school so I don’t lose touch.

Which position do you play? What gear do you prefer?

I play as a right winger. My job is to pass, cross and create chances. If the goal is open, I take my shot. Skills matter more than shoes, but I do like wearing studs because they keep the ball close to my feet.

What has football taught you?

My coach always tells me never to give up. Through football, I have learnt discipline, patience and the importance of staying focused even when things get tough.
