A fresh teenager, Sana Kakkar is already turning heads with her artistic flair. A Class 8 student at Apeejay School, Model Town, Jalandhar, Sana recently wowed her school community with a unique ‘Best Out of Waste’ artwork that features not one, but two ballerinas—dressed in pencil shavings, watermelon seeds, and newspaper! In this light-hearted and delightful chat, the young artist shares what sparks her ideas and what lies ahead on her creative journey.

Sana, you’re clearly super creative! What inspired you to make ballerinas out of pencil shavings and watermelon seeds?
Honestly, there was no big plan! I just thought I should do something different. I had made a chart in Class 7 on waste water using waste materials, so I guess this came from the same creative corner of my brain. I started with pencil shavings… didn’t like it at first, but my mom said, “Don’t give up!” So I kept going—and boom—it turned out awesome!

Did you already know you were going to make ballerinas? Or did the idea develop as you went along?
I had decided to make a ballerina from the start. Then my mom gave me the cool idea to use waste materials instead of regular stuff. That really got me thinking! So I ended up making two ballerinas—one in newspaper and seeds, and the other in pencil shavings and some tiny black things.

What do you love most about creating Best Out of Waste art?
It feels so good to give new life to things we usually throw away. Like newspapers in the storeroom became cones for the dress, and colourful pencil shavings suddenly looked perfect for ballerina skirts. I just love that nothing goes to waste!

How has your school supported your love for art?
Apeejay Model Town is amazing! I mostly write articles, but whenever I get a bit of free time, I go straight to drawing and painting. In Class 7, I sent pine cone and Madhubani artworks to the newsroom too. And honestly, my biggest supporters are my mom.

Any new artworks coming up? What are you planning next?
Hmm… I think my next project will be on canvas—maybe with acrylic paints. I haven’t finalised it yet, but something fun is definitely coming. I might even do another Best Out of Waste piece today or tomorrow!
