Human Resources has long been known as the heart of every organisation — a field where people and purpose meet. Yet, in today’s dynamic workplace, HR has evolved far beyond recruitment and payroll. It now demands professionals who understand both human behaviour and business strategy, combining empathy with analytical thinking to help organisations grow sustainably.

For many, a career in HR begins with a curiosity about people — how they think, work, and collaborate. “During my MBA, I realised my passion for recruiting and HR,” says Archi Sharma, alumna of Apeejay School of Management (ASM) and senior technical recruiter at Google since 2021. “I initially pursued a degree in CA but shifted to HR because it allowed me to communicate, interact, and help individuals grow in their careers.” Her journey reflects how HR attracts those who value connection and professional growth in equal measure.

But passion alone isn’t enough. To thrive in HR, the alumna believes one must develop strong communication and people skills alongside a deep understanding of business domains. Emotional intelligence, the ability to read and respond to others thoughtfully, is what separates good HR professionals from great ones.

“Understanding the domain well, having people skills, and focusing on learning the curriculum are crucial,” Sharma advises. “A strong foundation, such as that provided by ASM’s curriculum, can be highly beneficial in building an HR career.”

As workplaces become more diverse and technology-driven, HR professionals must balance data-based decision-making with genuine empathy. Educational institutions like ASM play a vital role in shaping this balance by equipping students with both theoretical insight and real-world application. For those who enjoy working with people, solving challenges, and shaping positive work cultures, HR offers not just a career but a chance to influence the future of work itself.
