Arica Batta, a student of Apeejay School, Saket, is making waves with her evocative poetry. Known for her mesmerising recitations, she was specially chosen by her school to perform at the Winter Carnival, where her poem left the audience spellbound. Selected as this week’s Apeejay Promising Poet, Arica shares the inspiration behind her poetry, her creative journey, and how she balances her love for verse with academics.
Arica, tell us about the poem you performed at the Winter Carnival.
The poem I performed, Life’s Journey, speaks about the struggles we all face and the resilience needed to overcome them. It highlights how challenges shape us and why it’s important to stay hopeful. More than material success, what truly matters is the joy and fulfillment we find along the way. Through this poem, I wanted to inspire people to keep moving forward with courage and grace.
What inspired you to write this poem?
I was deeply moved by the increasing number of people battling depression. Mental health struggles are so prevalent today, and I wanted to write something uplifting. My poem is a message of hope—a reminder that even in the darkest moments, we have the inner strength to rise.
What new poems have you written?
I recently wrote Rise to New Heights, another motivational piece about overcoming obstacles. I’ve also written a poem about Lord Krishna, exploring his divine wisdom and spirituality. Each poem I write is a reflection of my thoughts and emotions, and I love expressing them through words.
How is your school supporting your poetic journey?
My school has been incredibly supportive. My English teachers constantly encourage me to experiment with new styles and refine my craft. Even our Principal Sir motivates me to push my creative boundaries. Their belief in me has been a great source of confidence.
Any poems or books that inspire you?
The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho is one of my favorite books—it beautifully captures the essence of chasing one’s dreams. I also admire Robert Frost’s poetry, especially The Road Not Taken, which speaks deeply about choices and their impact on life.
How do you balance exams and poetry?
It can be challenging, but poetry is my escape. During study breaks, I write—it helps me process my thoughts and emotions. Writing poetry isn’t just a passion; it’s also a form of self-expression and stress relief that keeps me focused.
How was your experience performing at the Winter Carnival?
It was an unforgettable experience! I felt both nervous and excited, but once I started reciting, I connected deeply with the audience. Seeing people resonate with my words was truly rewarding. This experience has only strengthened my desire to share more poetry with the world.
