A day in Korea as students explore the culture at the Korean Centre

The Apeejay School International trip highlighted joyful and meaningful intercultural communication for students

The much-awaited doors of the Korean Cultural Centre India opened for the group of zealous students belonging to Apeejay School International, Panchsheel Park, embarking on a very special journey into the soul of Korea. It was an event that delved deeply into the depths of traditions and artistic heritage that constituted the way of life in Korea, rather than just being an excursion.

The day opened with very enriching input on the economic robustness undertaken by the representation of Korea through the Korean Chamber of Commerce. This was rich fodder for students of MYP-4 to DP-1 to fathom the layers of history and cultural evolution that went into the making of present-day Korea. More than an information piece, it was inviting for further exploration.

A Rhythmic and Stylish Investigation

The proceedings warmed up further still with a live experience of the hottest beats of Samulnori, a genre of traditional Korean music that pumped up the crowd and captured everyone’s attention. This was well-received with the elegance of an entry toward the grace of Korea’s traditional dress, called Hanbok. Added to that was its festivity of colour and symbolic designs that turned the occasion into a real visual feast — and turned out to be a real lesson on fashion as a form of cultural expression for the visiting students.

Engagement through Traditional Games and Cuisine

It was through the traditional games that the students were able to manifest the real spirit of Korean culture. They took part in games like Tuho, a kind of throwing stick into a canister, as well as the game Jegichagi (hacky sack to the Americans). These are not mere fun games; they were evidence of how the kind of entertainment being delivered by Koreans indeed speaks of the nature of delight to be shared with shared pleasure. Probably the most active feature of the show was the Taekwondo exhibition. That has to go without saying as Korea plays the stereotype for martial arts.

No cultural visit can end without having some local delicacy. The students would get a chance to sample the various dishes from Korea, which made quite a happening event among these young discoverers. That was, in a way, a good coming to the end of business of the day.

Going to the Korean Cultural Centre for educational underpinnings broadens more than words can fully encompass. The cultural experience enveloped the students and left them with a better understanding and increased appreciation of Korean traditional practices and contemporary cultures. The music, dress, culinary delicacies and even martial arts combined to give an all-rounded exposure to Korean culture.

Overall, it was an incredible event in the sense that it did much to educate and inspire students toward the rich tapestry of both history and modernity that Korea held in store. This made it great to show that intercultural communication can be meaningful and filled with joy.
