According to Padmashri Shobha Deepak Singh, serving as the Director of Shriram Bharatiya Kala Kendra who showcases Shri Ram in the medium of dance drama since 1957, “The Ramayan opens a door through the medium of a story to an inner world of a powerful truth which has motivated and guided Indians for periods of time in history. The theme possesses a togetherness of form and message which allows the story to penetrate logic and doubt that guard the inner life of the human soul. At every step along our way and whilst following the footsteps of Lord Rama, we meet helpers and messengers of the Lord who show us the way just as Rama did during his exile. The epic tale of Lord Rama presents a combination of core values that display feelings of loyalty, love, hate, fear, and respect to the elders even in tough family relationships.”

She adds, “The primary goal of Ramleela is to educate both the younger generation and adults about how the Lord represented ideals. There are numerous concepts that are difficult for the average person to comprehend. It is for this very purpose that every year ShiramBharatiya Kala Kendra takes on the task of performing it for more than three weeks.”

Certainly, Ramleela has always held a significant place in our traditions. However, due to the increasingly busy and hectic lifestyles people lead today, the traditional Ramleelas have faced challenges in attracting audiences. This situation has prompted a shift in the way Ramleela is presented, with some committees opting for a shorter adaptation known as “Sampoorn Ramleela.” This condensed version offers a 3-hour performance that captures the essence of the Ramayana story.

As per Rajender Mittal, Creator of Broadway Ramlila in North Delhi and President, Aryan Heritage Foundation, “As audience interest waned in the traditional 10-day Ramleela format, we felt the need for innovation to keep them engaged. Consequently, in both North and South Delhi, there are ten Sampoorn Ramayans being staged this year. Each one is striving to creatively depict this epic tale in a more concise theatrical format. That’s why Heritage Foundation is set to present the ‘Broadway Ramlila,’ which includes action, drama, and original songs.

He continues, “Adapting this incredible story into a three-hour performance is undoubtedly a challenge, but our goal is to present it as a captivating live theatrical experience akin to a movie on stage.” Mr Mittal grew up around the Ramleela tradition with his grandfather being the founder of Delhi’s oldest Ramleela, ‘Luv Kush Ramlila’ which has given him a deep connection to its evolution. “It’s gratifying to see that we’ve found a way to transmit this incredible tradition to the younger generation in a more concise format, with a primary focus on imparting the teachings from the Ramayan. It’s of utmost importance for our youth to understand the values that the Ramayan imparts, particularly the crucial lessons of selfless love and selfless duty.”

Furthermore, sharing her view on the impact of modernisation and technology in Ramleela, Singh says, “Every aspect of our production is given careful consideration, including the creation of the sets, costumes, lighting, background music, and animations for providing equal opportunity to all the skilled and well- trained dancers and so on. All this goes into the making of Lord Rama, thus transforming the production into an amazing audio-visual presentation.”
