From honeycombs in beehives to mosaic tiles in ancient temples, patterns make up the very fabric of the universe. For centuries, mathematicians have been captivated by the way shapes repeat, fit, and flow together. In fact, the concept of patterns forms the basis of not just mathematical thinking but also nature’s design and human creativity. Understanding patterns is like unlocking a secret rhythm of the world—an elegant dance of logic and art.
But for many students, mathematics can feel more like a maze than a melody. That’s why hands-on creativity is such a powerful bridge—it transforms fear into fascination. It opens the doors to imagination and helps learners see that numbers, shapes, and formulas are not just abstract ideas but playful tools to understand the world. And that’s exactly what students of Class 6-B at Apeejay School, Model Town, experienced during a recent activity in the Maths Lab.

As part of their lesson on the chapter Patterns in Mathematics, the young learners delved into the fascinating world of tessellations—the art of fitting geometric shapes together in a repeated design without any gaps or overlaps. Equipped with a special Tessellation Kit, each student became a designer, working with triangles, squares, and hexagons to create intricate, beautiful patterns.
The room soon buzzed with excitement as the children experimented with symmetry, colour combinations, and shape placement. Every piece they arranged was a small celebration of structure and aesthetics. With each click of shape against shape, the students weren’t just building designs—they were building understanding.
The session highlighted how visual and tactile experiences can deepen mathematical comprehension. It was not just about geometry—it was about discovering connections, recognising repetition, and appreciating order. Most importantly, it revealed to the students that maths isn’t just about solving problems—it’s also about creating beauty.

By the end of the activity, what emerged were not just patterns on paper, but also smiles on faces and confidence in minds. Through this joyful, engaging exploration, the learners of Class 6-B stepped boldly into the playground of imagination and real knowledge—where maths isn’t scary, it’s simply magical.
