Keshvi Priya Sinha is a Mass Communication student at School of Journalism & Mass Communication at Apeejay Stya University (ASU) and a true talent when it comes to poetry and recitation. Popular at ASU for her heartfelt poems, this week’s “Apeejay Promising Poet” shares her journey, inspirations, and the creative process that fuels her poetic flair.

At what age did you start writing poetry?
I wrote my first poem when I was in 9th standard, at the age of 14.

That’s great! What inspired you to start writing poems?
I developed a habit of listening to poems by various poets, which stirred something inside me. In 2019, I came across a sensational poem by Poet Prakhyaat Mishra on YouTube, and that was the spark I needed. It deeply inspired me to start writing my own.

3 Rapid fire questions! Your favourite poet and poem?
Poet: Ramdhari Singh Dinkar
Poem: Rashmirathi

Rhyme or free verse?
Always rhyme for me!

Writing poems during the day or night?
I write at night because the silence helps me focus, and there are no distractions.

But how has ASU encouraged you in your poetic journey?
ASU has given me numerous creative platforms to express myself. One such platform is the Apeejay Newsroom website, where I get to share my work. It’s been an incredible space for my creativity to flourish.

How do you approach writing a poem? How long does it usually take you to finish one?
A poem comes from within when something touches my heart—whether it’s something beautiful or shocking. I usually finish a poem in about an hour, but sometimes it can take longer depending on the depth of what I want to express. My favourite theme is patriotism or Veer Ras.

Finally, what’s the best thing about writing poetry for you?
The best part is finding a passion where I can truly express myself. Poetry gives me that outlet.
