Students excel in different areas and at varying paces. Broad recognition of academic success celebrates diverse talents, including creativity, problem-solving, critical thinking, and teamwork. This inclusivity can boost self-esteem and encourage students to pursue their interests and strengths passionately.
When academic recognition is broadened beyond the top performers, it teaches students that learning is a lifelong journey, not just a race to be won. This understanding can inspire a love for learning that extends beyond the classroom, fostering curiosity and a desire for continuous personal and professional development.
Meet one such student – Praatik Kauldhar. Praatik is a student of class IX (now in class X) at Apeejay School, Model Town. After being conferred with the Dr Stya Paul Award for Human Values when he was in class VIII has displayed the importance of holistic development that Apeejay Education stands for.
In a candid interview, he talks about a project that he is proud of among other things.
Tell us a little about yourself.
I am at present, navigating the challenges and opportunities of going to class X. It’s going to be a pivotal year for me, both academically and personally, as I prepare for my Board exams and start planning for the future.
How do you manage to maintain a balance between your academic responsibilities and other activities?

Maintaining a balance is indeed crucial for me. I believe in the importance of holistic development, so even during hectic exam periods, I ensured that I allocated time for sports alongside my studies. This practice helps me keep a clear mind and stay physically active, which, in turn, enhances my academic performance.
Do you follow a specific study method to help you remember the material you’ve learned?
Rather than sticking to a strict method, I prefer setting up a flexible schedule that outlines what needs to be studied and when. This approach allows me to stay organised and keep track of my progress, ensuring that no subject is neglected.
How do you organise your study schedule, especially with tight deadlines for your exams?
Planning and prioritisation were key. I assessed the amount of material to be covered and allocated specific days for each subject based on urgency and difficulty. This structured yet flexible approach ensures I maximize my study time and maintain a steady pace toward covering all necessary topics. When I fall behind, I remind myself that flexibility in my schedule is vital. Adapting to unexpected changes and extending my study hours into the night if needed helps me catch up without compromising on the quality of my preparation.
Facing the stress of exams is inevitable. How do you manage such pressures?
Engaging in sports is my go-to strategy for managing stress. It’s a natural stress buster that keeps me fit and mentally sharp. Moreover, the support and positive environment my parents provided at home played a crucial role in keeping stress at bay.
What sport do you play and why?
I play tennis. I was introduced to tennis by my father, but have developed a deep love for the game over the years. The thrill of the game, coupled with the satisfaction of mastering challenging shots, makes tennis not just a sport but a passion for me.

Have you set any goals for yourself, especially concerning your future career?
I’ve set my sights on becoming a doctor, a goal that demands both dedication and sacrifice. Understanding the need to prioritize, I’m prepared to adjust my schedule, ensuring that my academic pursuits, especially in science, take precedence as I navigate my way toward this ambitious goal.
Advice to younger students on how to improve their academic performance.
My advice would be to find a balance that works for you. It’s essential to stay calm, be organized, and include physical activities in your routine. Remember, taking regular breaks and limiting screen time can significantly enhance your focus and overall well-being.
Projects or activities in the past year that stand out to you.
I embarked on a science project focusing on sustainable farming techniques, which, although challenging, has been a rewarding experience – it was aquaponics. The idea is to grow plants in the water with the fish and snails in the pond below the plants. The waste from the fish provides nourishment to the plants and the plants clean the water for the fish.
Everyone has a role model. Who do you look up to, and why?
My role models have evolved. While I once admired various sports personalities, my parents, both dedicated doctors, are my greatest inspiration now. Their commitment to their profession and the impact they make every day motivates me to pursue a career in medicine.
