With an inspiring mix of determination, routine, and curiosity, Ashmita Banerjee, a Class 8 student of Apeejay School, Kharghar, has made an indelible mark in the SOF (Science Olympiad Foundation) Olympiads. Her journey, dotted with multiple Gold Medals of Distinction, Certificates of Zonal Excellence, and a top 100 international rank, reflects more than just academic excellence – it showcases a young learner’s passion for knowledge. In a candid conversation, Ashmita shared her Olympiad story, preparation strategies, dreams, and tips for fellow students.

Ashmita, tell us how your Olympiad journey began. What sparked your interest?

When I was in Class 3, I saw many of my friends participating in the SOF Olympiads and winning medals. That really inspired me. I felt if they could do it, so could I! My teachers and school environment also played a big role in motivating me.

Do you remember how your first Olympiad experience went?

Oh yes, my first attempt wasn’t great – I didn’t score well. But it was a learning experience. It helped me understand the exam pattern and what kind of preparation was needed. That’s when I began taking it more seriously.

You’ve been consistent for three years now. What’s your secret?

Consistency comes from a mix of planning and motivation. I prepare using MTG guidebooks, previous years’ papers, and YouTube tutorials. My mother is a huge support – she guides me through logical reasoning, current affairs, and subjects like history and geography with NCERT books. I study Olympiad topics around four times a week, apart from regular schoolwork.

What role did your teachers and school play in your success?

My teachers have been very supportive. Whenever I had doubts, they patiently explained concepts and gave me extra insights. That helped a lot, especially in subjects like science and social studies.

What has been your most special achievement so far?

Definitely this year’s ISSO award! I stood in the top 10 zonally and top 100 internationally – and even won a cash prize for the first time! The months of effort I put into preparation really paid off.

What are your career aspirations?

I aspire to become an IAS officer. My mother inspired this dream – she once wanted to become an IAS officer herself. She told me how I could make real change and represent India at global platforms, which deeply influenced me.

How do you balance school studies with Olympiad preparation?

I first complete my school assignments and revision. After that, I dedicate 30 minutes to an hour for Olympiad preparation, four days a week. It helps to stay consistent without feeling overwhelmed.

What would be your advice to younger students who want to start with Olympiads?

Start early – use your summer holidays wisely. Read current affairs, solve reasoning books, and revise NCERTs. Practice at least the last 10 years’ papers. And for English Olympiads, read storybooks to build vocabulary and comprehension.
