Recently, Apeejay School, Tanda Road, Jalandhar, began its Skill Enhancement Week for students from Pre-nursery to Class II. The initiative focuses on practical learning and everyday life skills at an early age. The programme is designed to help young learners understand habits that shape their daily lives, both at home and in school. At this stage, such experiences play an important role in building awareness and routine. The school has structured the week to introduce simple yet essential concepts through activities that children can easily relate to and practise daily.
Day 1: Cleanliness and personal care
The first day introduced students to the importance of cleanliness and personal hygiene. Children explored handwashing through a simple soap and pepper activity. This helped them see how soap removes dirt and germs in an easy, visual way. They also practised proper handwashing and brushing techniques, guided step by step.
A handwashing song added energy to the session and helped students remember the process. The learning extended into other areas of the day. A short video reinforced the idea of staying clean, while activities like leaf printing and dance gave students space to express themselves creatively.

Teachers observed that combining practice with music and visuals made it easier for children to understand and retain these habits. At this stage, repeated exposure plays a key role in building routine behaviour.
Day 2: Good manners and everyday courtesy
The second day shifted focus to behaviour and social interaction. Students took part in role-play activities that showed the difference between polite and impolite actions. Everyday situations such as asking for help or sharing space were used to explain how simple words can change how people feel.
Children practised using basic expressions like ‘please’, ‘thank you’, ‘sorry’, and ‘excuse me’. A rhyme session with actions helped reinforce these words in a playful setting. The aim was to help students connect language with behaviour in real situations.

The day also included yoga and computer sessions, adding balance to the schedule. These activities supported both physical awareness and basic digital familiarity.
Building habits early
What this really shows is how early education is moving beyond academics. Schools are placing equal focus on habits, behaviour, and awareness. These small lessons, when introduced early, tend to stay with children as they grow.
Skill Enhancement Week continued with similar themes in the coming days, focusing on helping students become more aware, responsible, and confident in everyday life.
