To spread awareness about the power of the audio medium, World Radio Day is observed on 13 February, every year. The day is celebrated to adapt the transformation of radio into the digital world and highlight its role in creating a connected society.
Keeping in mind the importance of this day, Apeejay College of Fine Arts, Jalandhar, recently organised a competition to familiarise its students with various aspects of radio. The event included RJ hunt, news reading, radio talk, storytelling, poetry, and radio interview.
Mr Sandeep Singh, Head of the Department of Punjabi, and Ms Anuradha, Faculty from the department, were the judges for this competition. All the competitions saw enthusiastic participation from students of all the departments of the college.
Ansh, who is pursuing Bachelor of Journalism and Mass Communication (BJMC) and is in semester 2, bagged the first position. At the same time, Simrat of BDM semester 4 and Hitin of B.Voc Dance semester 6 shared the second position. Along with them, Nandini of BJMC semester 2 and Vansh of B.Voc product design semester 2 got the third prize.
On winning first prize, Ansh said, “Our College gave us a great opportunity to overcome our fears in front of the public. I won the first prize in this competition and I am really thankful to my teachers and principal ma’am for the wonderful opportunity.”
“I am grateful to the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication for organising RJ hunt in college premises on the occasion of World Radio Day. This opportunity helped us in Channelising our speaking skills in a studio atmosphere,” said Vansh.

Another student, Hiten said, “The competition was organised by the department of Journalism and Mass Communication. I had a very good learning experience as this was my first RJ hunt competition.”
Dr Neerja Dhingra, Principal at ACFA said, “Today’s age is the age of media and radio, which acts not just as a means of entertainment, but also provides information. No doubt, mobile phones are owned by all the people in the current times but still, radio has upheld its position and people prefer to listen to it in their free time, and especially during travel. This proves that people’s attachment to radio is still intact.”
“Moreover, through such competitions, students get a platform to identify their potential and talents and choose them as their profession in the future,” she added.
Highlighting Apeejay’s legacy, she said, “At Apeejay, we focus not only on theory but practical aspects too.”
She congratulated the winning students and appreciated the efforts of Ms Nivedita Khosla and Ms Surbhi Tandon of Department of Journalism for successfully organising the entire event.
