Each year, on June 21, the world comes together to celebrate World Music Day, a global event that transcends borders and unites people through the universal language of music. Established in 1982 by France’s Ministry of Culture, this day, also known as Fête de la Musique, has grown into a worldwide phenomenon. It celebrates not only the art of music but also its power to bring people together, regardless of their cultural, social, or economic backgrounds. The theme for World Music Day 2024, Harmony in Diversity, emphasises the unifying power of music and its ability to bridge differences, fostering understanding and peace among diverse communities.
Over the years, this celebration has spread to over 120 countries, making it a truly global event. From amateur musicians to professional artists, everyone is encouraged to participate and make music a part of public life, promoting a sense of community and shared cultural heritage.
Advocating the earnest qualities of music, Dr Amita Pandey (Mishra), Associate Professor, Performing Arts Department at Apeejay College of Fine Arts (ACFA), Jalandhar iterates, “For me, music is a divine passion and an integral part of my life, It brings peace to my soul and mind. It serves as a form of meditation for me. I come from a family deeply rooted in music. My day begins and ends with music. Every member of my family, including my father-in-law Pandit Shankar Lal Mishraji, who was the founding principal of ACFA, my husband, and my son, all come from this background. That’s why our home always resonates with this atmosphere.”

Listening to music alleviates my tiredness throughout the day, the educator shared. “I immerse myself in a musical atmosphere at college, teaching music to ACFA students is like a second home to me. The peace I find in teaching and watching my students’ progress is my true happiness. Classical music is my favorite genre, its soothing tones relax my ears, and as a result, I can maintain focus in my work. For the last 20 years, our music students have been winning at the National Youth Festival, and I am hopeful that they will continue to do so in the future,” Professor Mishra stated.

The 2024 theme is particularly poignant in today’s world, where cultural understanding and inclusivity are more important than ever. Music, with its ability to transcend language and cultural barriers, serves as a perfect medium to celebrate diversity and foster harmony. Let’s explore how.
Cultural Exchange: The theme encourages musicians and music lovers to explore and appreciate different musical traditions from around the world. It highlights the importance of cultural exchange and the richness that diverse musical styles bring to our global tapestry.
Inclusivity: It also underscores the need for inclusivity in the music industry. It advocates for giving a platform to underrepresented voices and ensuring that music remains a space where everyone, regardless of background, can express themselves freely.
Unity Through Music: The theme emphasises music’s unique ability to unite people. Whether it’s through shared performances, collaborative projects, or simply enjoying music together, World Music Day 2024 aims to strengthen the bonds that tie us all.
The Impact
World Music Day is more than just a celebration; it’s a movement that advocates for the power of music as a tool for social change. By promoting the theme: Harmony in Diversity, the 2024 celebrations aim to:
