Why your first job isn’t your last chance

For many fresh graduates, there’s immense pressure to get everything right from the beginning. A high-paying role at a reputed company or an offer in their dream industry can feel like a make-or-break moment. But the truth is, the first job rarely defines an entire career – it simply opens the first door.
Every career has a starting point – even if it’s not glamorous
It’s common to start out in a role that’s less than perfect. The salary may be modest, the company unknown, or the responsibilities not aligned with long-term passions. And that’s completely normal.
Mr Ankur Sood, an Apeejay School, Faridabad alumnus and now a Test Architect at IBM India, began his journey in a lesser-known firm in Delhi. “I gave my 100% to whatever task was given,” he says. “Eventually, it opened doors to better opportunities.”
His journey is a reminder that early roles matter more for the habits and work ethic they build than for the names on the business card.
The first job is a launchpad, not a life sentence
The first job should be seen as a training ground – a place to:
Learn professional communication
Understand team collaboration
Discover personal strengths and interests
Get used to solving real-world problems
Even if someone enters the workforce unsure of their path, they’ll exit their first role with greater clarity and market-ready skills.

Career paths are rarely linear. Many professionals begin in one domain and pivot into another – marketers become UX designers, testers shift to cybersecurity, and salespeople turn into entrepreneurs.
Mr Sood’s own experience reflects this flexibility. “When I started, testing wasn’t my first choice,” he admits. “But I committed to learning, upskilled myself, and started liking it. Today, I lead global testing strategies.”
Careers are marathons, not sprints
There will be detours, restarts, and experiments along the way. Not getting into a dream company immediately is not a career-ending event. With focus, patience, and adaptability, professionals can build fulfilling journeys – no matter where they begin.
That first job? It’s just the prologue. The real story is still unfolding.
