Ever since I was young, I harboured aspirations of making a mark in the medical field. However, I was consistently uncertain about which specific path to pursue. Initially, I found myself drawn towards Dermatology, but my evolving interests led me to consider Optometry. After a few months of exploration, a pivotal moment occurred while I was engrossed in a book and stumbled upon a chapter about surgeons. As I delved into the contents of that chapter, a growing fascination for the field enveloped me, finally providing clarity on my specialisation. This journey begs the question: Why did I choose to become a general surgeon?

In the process of studying the chapter about general surgery, I encountered a myriad of terms that instantly piqued my curiosity. Words like “laparoscopy,” “hemiplegia,” “cardiac arrest,” and more held a unique allure and captured my attention. Additionally, I recognised the pivotal role that surgeons play in our lives, from welcoming newborns into the world to performing life-saving surgeries that ensure the well-being of patients. While the prospect of performing surgery might seem daunting, with its intricate knowledge of bodily organs and the presence of blood, I resolved to confront my apprehensions and embrace the field.

Undoubtedly, the path of a general surgeon is challenging. However, I am determined to overcome these challenges and channel my efforts into mastering this discipline. Despite the perceived difficulty, I am committed to dedicating myself wholeheartedly, pouring in hard work, dedication, and unwavering perseverance. My goal is to achieve excellence in this field, even if it demands that I conquer my fears along the way.
